Myspace…remember that? After years of attempting to make it as a social networking site, it’s taken further steps to jump start popularity by unveiling a new mobile enabled website and iOS app.

Rather than aiming to compete with giants such as Facebook and Twitter, Myspace has opted to take on the world of music streaming. The (slightly) less overcrowded market, which includes big names such as Spotify and , has been where Myspace has set it’s sights for some time now and the release of the new app is a sign that the ailing company is confident in it’s latest model.

The social music app has a radio function with access to millions of songs, and several new features intended to connect musicians and other artists with their audience. Unlike Pandora and Google Play, the app allows user to ‘create their own radio stations’ rather than choose from a predetermined list. The ad-supported function doesn’t rely on an algorithm to create personalised stations, instead it allows users — many of whom are musicians — to create stations and mixes themselves. So when users choose to listen to an artist they hear both their songs and the songs by other artists who they like or who inspire their music.

Interestingly, Myspace has chosen to launch an iOS-only app and simply create a mobile enabled website for other device users, perhaps testing the water before investing in Andriod apps and others.

Myspace’s new streaming service comes in the same week that Apple announced a similar feature for it’s next operating system – iOS7. iTunes radio will work on a similar principle, streaming music from radio stations, with the ability to tailor listening based on the users iTunes listening history. Apple already has approximately 575million iTunes user accounts, meaning it’s new streaming service could pose a real threat to similar apps, like Pandora, Spotify and MySpace, when it launches later this year.
